The Threat of Abrasive Particles

In cement production and steel manufacturing, fabric expansion joints are constantly bombarded by high-velocity abrasive media such as clinker dust, fly ash, and raw mill particles. This continuous abrasive action can rapidly erode the inner layers of a standard expansion joint, leading to premature failure and system leakage. BundleTec recognizes that surviving these harsh environments requires more than just robust fabrics; it demands comprehensive mechanical engineering and strategic internal protection.

Internal Flow Liners and Baffle Designs

To protect the primary flexible element, BundleTec designs heavy-duty internal flow liners (baffles) made from wear-resistant alloys such as AR400 or stainless steel. These liners are engineered to redirect the flow of abrasive particles away from the fabric gap, significantly reducing direct impingement. Furthermore, the space between the liner and the fabric is often filled with specialized insulation pillows to prevent ash accumulation, which can restrict movement during thermal cycling and cause mechanical tearing.

Predictive Maintenance and Lifecycle Optimization

Maximizing the lifespan of fabric expansion joints requires a proactive approach to maintenance. BundleTec recommends regular thermographic inspections to detect hot spots that indicate internal insulation failure or gas bypass. By monitoring external surface temperatures and visually inspecting clamping areas for signs of stress or elastomer degradation, plant operators can schedule targeted replacements during planned outages, avoid catastrophic failures, and ensure continuous heavy industrial production.
